Sumatra is home to many unique species now endangered by deforestation and it was their struggle that inspired me to create Sumatra – Imperiled Voices of the Forest. In this short video with original music, the perils of the Sumatra tiger, rhino, elephant, and orangutan are being highlighted. While reading up on their heartbreaking struggles I learned, among other things, that there are less then 400 remaining Sumatran tigers, that Sumatran Rhinos once roamed from the foothills of the Himalayas to the Malay Peninsula, that Sumatran elephants have become locally extinct due to high rates of deforestation, and that the orangutan is referred to as “person of the forest” because of their close resemblance to our own species.
