“Santa Fe & Esmeralda” is a narrative based on a true story that weaves together the friendship between a young Dutch musician and the gay son of a prominent political family in Argentina who is struggling with AIDS amidst Argentina’s transition to democracy. Set against the backdrop of Buenos Aires’ vibrant art scene from 1987 to 1996, this memoir celebrates the enduring power of human connection amidst cultural exploration, personal growth, and historical context.

…We met in Buenos Aires on one of those beautiful November days. The color of our meeting was lavender blue. Our friendship was a fairytale.

 

Lavender blue, dilly-dilly, lavender green
If you were king, dilly-dilly, you’d need a queen

 

In the southern hemisphere, November means “spring,” and the pavements and parks of the city were covered in lilac flowers dispersed by the abundant Jacaranda trees scattered around the city. I can still feel my feet sinking into the delicate carpet of flowers that brushed against them gently when crossing the park.

Lorenzo’s favorite book was “The Little Prince,” and our meeting felt destined, so I believe. It was at Plaza Francia, like runaway shadows of a tired ballet, that he told me Saint-Exupéry’s story, which he had memorized. He told me how the story follows a young prince who visits various planets in space, including Earth, and addresses themes of loneliness, friendship, love, and loss.

 

As Lorenzo had completely identified with the character of the prince, he left me with the role of the pilot-narrator, the other character in the book. And thus, I am recalling our story, in memory of my friend, a memorial to the prince he was, and the time we had together…
